The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has issued an official amendment to the 2021 Electronics Compulsory Registration Order, expanding the scope of the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (BIS-CRS) to cover standalone hard disk drives (HDDs). The amendment extends the mandatory registration requirement to include internal HDD units and bare-drive HDDs not connected via a USB interface. All covered HDD products must fully comply with the Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 for IT equipment safety requirements, effective November 5, 2026.
